Statement
id
This project is derived from a collection of passports and
ID cards going back to 1974 when I was 23 years old. The
photographs in them constitute a history of my face during
thirty years of adulthood. They show the ageing process,
but also a history of employment, travel and experience:
a kind of biography.
They were photocopied over and over to eradicate the details
and leave just amorphous shapes resembling heads. These
have been scanned and output as pigment-inkjet prints on
art paper.
The intention was to create abstracted forms out of realistic
photographs; to ‘provoke’ the institutional
portraits of social control to release out of themselves
images that suggest the human psyche. It is analogous to
Freud’s Id and Superego; the irrepressible subconcious
mind breaking through the self-controlling conscience. Hence
the double meaning of the title.
